Class C: Oxidizing Material This is a substance that will cause another substance to burn
more easily.
Examples: bleach (hypochlorite), nitrates, peroxides,
oxygen.
Class D: Poisonous and
Infectious Material
Division 1: Materials Causing Division 1: Materials in this division can cause death in test
Immediate and Serious Toxic animals in short-term experiments.
Effects
Examples: hydrogen sulphide gas, strychnine, arsenic,
carbon monoxide.
Division 2: Materials Causing Division 2: These generally have longer-term (chronic)
Toxic Effects effects such as liver, lung, kidney damage, cancer, birth
defects, effects to the reproductive system or central nervous
system. Or they cause sensitization or irritation.
Examples: organic solvents, crystalline silica, lead,
cleansers, formaldehyde.
Division 3: Biohazardous Division 3: This division deals with organisms which can
Infectious Material cause disease. For the purposes of WHMIS, this group
addresses materials (cultures, specimens) which are being
handled because they are biohazardous.
Examples: viruses and bacteria such as anthrax,
SARS, HIV, ebola, e-coli.
Class E: Corrosive Material A substance that will corrode steel or aluminum or cause
irreversible tissue damage.
Examples: sulphuric acid, chlorine, sodium hydroxide.
