WHMIS Train-the-Trainer Overview
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Train‐the‐Trainer program
has been designed to provide technical WHMIS information and administrative guidance to
individuals to enable them to become WHMIS trainers. AMHSA‐certified WHMIS trainers are
authorized to educate employees at their worksites.
An AMHSA‐authorized trainer is someone who has taken this one‐day WHMIS Train‐the‐Trainer
course and successfully passed the exam (minimum 80%).

The technical information provided to trainers in this course is more detailed than most
employees will require. This level of information is provided because the trainers will be the
municipality’s WHMIS resource and as such should be able to answer most questions asked by
employees.

TRAIN-THE-TRAINER PROCESS
Trainers take this course, write exam, and attain a mark of at least 80%.
AMHSA issues a certificate to the trainers, certifying them to conduct training on the
Association’s behalf in their municipality only.
When WHMIS training is needed, a certified trainer reviews site‐specific needs, orders self‐
