AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
The Americans with Disabilities Act went into effect on January 26, 1992. To this nation's more than 43 million citizens with disabilities, the ADA represents an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate the barriers to independence and productivity. The ADA is modeled after the Civil Rights Act and Title V of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The bill was originally drafted by the National Council on Disability and is supported by every major disability organization and constituency group. The purpose of the ADA is to extend to people with disabilities civil rights similar to those now available on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin and religion through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the private sector and in local and state private entities. It also includes provisions for telecommunications relay services. Timetables for the issuance of regulations and for compliance vary from section to section in the ADA. Some features of the act become effective almost immediately while other features are phased in over several years. Copies of the ADA are available from your senators and representatives and can be found in your local library.

For CTPR Employees
ADA means that employees and prospective employees with disabilities must have reasonable accommodations to allow them to enter and perform as a Clinton Township Recreation employee.
• If you need any accommodation for a disability see the Director or Assistant Director for assistance.
For Participants
ADA means that participants and potential participants with disabilities must have reasonable accommodations made so that they might participate in the many programs and services we offer. When accommodating a participant requires extraordinary adaptations please contact the Director or Assistant Director for assistance.
Never refuse a request for an accommodation by a person with a disability. Always promise to bring it to the staff administration and do so. Get a name, phone number and address so that we can follow up with the person in a timely fashion.
