Editor’s Epilogue
Sarasworthy Somasundaram was born 15 March 1923.
She passed away quietly in her sleep on the 11 July 1999, at Amaragiri, Uduvil (Jaffna).
She was my maternal grandmother. Gleaning through her thoughts and memories has been
a very precious experience for me. I am glad that she came to live with us in New Zealand in
the 90s. I feel that she instilled some very important beliefs and views into me. I hope to
carry her with me for the remainder of my life.
She often sang “Carry me back to old Amaragiri”. I think she longed for Amaragiri to be her
final resting place. After reading her memoirs, particularly the story about her dreams of
my grandfather Samuel, I can see why she felt she had to go back.
The original manuscript for my Grandmother’s memoirs was only unearthed by my Amma in
March 2017. It seems fitting that it was found around the time of her birthday.
