The Chess Game
Early 1970s, Brunei
The Sultan of Brunei was addicted to Chess, and he was a brilliant player.
On hearing about Peter Annan’s prowess at Chess, he invited him to play a game with him.
The first day Peter Annan walked into the palace, the officer who received him had advised
him in confidence “Give the Sultan a good game sire, but let him win in the end, every
time!”
Peter Annan followed his advice of course. He enjoyed the Sultan’s friendship and
hospitality all the year that he worked there.
