P. 5

NOTE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Throughout 2018, CALEA Commissioners and staff remained committed to the primary mission of providing professional credentialing services to public safety agencies on an international platform. To that end and as a result of ongoing directed efforts and special initiatives, more agencies are enrolled in CALEA Accreditation programs than at any other time in our organization’s history. Additionally, the associated standards are now providing support to a greater number of public safety leaders and practitioners across North America, the Caribbean, and throughout Mexico than ever before.
With a focus on providing greater recognition and support for those serving as managers
of accreditation processes, the first two CALEA® Accreditation Manager Certifications were awarded in March. The development and implementation of this professional credential required partnerships with other associations and the establishment of a professionally constructed curriculum and award criteria. This initiative is indicative of how CALEA values the accreditation manager role within accredited agencies and how we strive to provide substantive support for those working in these positions.
As an example of our commitment to business excellence, independent financial audits indicate control measures are being appropriately applied and financial resources soundly managed. Furthermore, technological solutions implemented by the organization have yielded greater client resources and better service capacities. And, staff has remained focused on supporting public safety agencies through the accreditation process.
To address service demands, additional Compliance Services Members were added to staff during the year to meet annual assessment requirements for enrolled agencies. Efforts with the United States Department of State - International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) and the National Police Foundation were applied to expand accreditation services in Mexico. Finally, web- based reporting tools were refined to ensure the collection of relevant data and the production of high-quality assessment reports in the most seamless and efficient manner possible.
During this reporting period, Craig Webre completed his third term and retired from
service as a CALEA Commissioner. Unfortunately, in April we also experienced the passing of Commissioner Douglas Knight, a highly regarded public safety professional and sincere friend to many. Although each commissioner contributes positively to the organization, these individuals provided unprecedented leadership over the course of their involvement with our organization, and their efforts will always be remembered as significant and meaningful.
As a progressive association, we always will work to identify and implement innovative solutions to support the administration of our accreditation programming, and I hope you will recognize this business culture within the 2018 annual report. You will find the use of words like professional, value-added, supportive and relevant are themes throughout this publication. CALEA has always anchored its mission to these attributes and we take great pride as a service provider to the most noble of all professions...public safety.
