SEROJA

                               Indonesia's Cuisine by The Sea
                                                   by Helen Trustrum

If you haven’t visited Seroja Café yet I urge to do so soon. NZIA Committee members made a visit to this
Indonesian Restaurant situated at 1 Clyde Quay Wharf for lunch one sunny Saturday in July. The café is situated
where you can sit and enjoy views of the yachts, blue water and people walking their dogs along the promenade
outside, because it is located in what used to be Mojo Pōneke.

The café was busy on this Saturday lunchtime and the delightful staff welcomed us immediately and ushered us
to a table on the side of the room which felt light and warm. The décor was tastefully arranged with interesting
Indonesian artifacts, textiles and the smell of coffee and baking made us feel very welcome. Each table mat told
a story about various aspects of Indonesian culture; mine informed me about shadow puppetry and I thought it
was an interesting and very personal way of introducing guests to some part of the diverse Indonesian
culture. There was even a becak outside.

Cabinet food had a tempting array of both traditional Indonesian cakes plus recognizable Kiwi biscuits. I bought a
piece of coconut cake to take home with me and wasn’t disappointed in the glorious coconut laden flavour.
Espresso coffee and traditional Indonesian coffee and tea is available to drink in or take away.

The special of the day was Mie Ayam Jamur which was a delicious chicken noodle and mushroom dish. I had
Nasi Goreng and it was beautifully presented with krupuk and tofu and immediately transported me back to
Indonesia. The menu was varied and had a range of delicious food for all tastes.

I am definitely going to be recommending Seroja Café to friends and I can’t wait to return again to sample some
more of their very tempting menu. And I understand that they will be serving dinners from 25 July which will be
             even more tempting.

Seroja is currently closed on Tuesdays and is open 7.30a.m. – 2.30p.m. on weekdays and until 4pm at the
             weekend. (/HT)
