CHAPTER UP AND AWARE - 8
(Critical Thinking)
Quote Unquote
‘Young friends all over the world, you are the ones who must realise these rights, now and for
all time. Their fate and future is in your hands.’
—Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General, United Nations
Beginning:
At the end of World War II, the United
Nations was set up to work towards world
peace. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the
then US President Franklin Roosevelt,
headed a committee to document the
rights that everyone in the world should
have—The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights. Today, 193 members of the United
Nations have signed the Declaration to protect the rights of their people.
They agree that—
‘Every person is entitled to certain
rights—simply by the fact that they are
a human being. They are rights because
they are things you are allowed to be,
to do or to have. These rights are there
for your protection against people who
might want to harm or hurt you. They
are also there to help us get along with
each other and live in peace.’
