All trees: (sing together)
Oh! Old Tree!
You don’t give fruits.
You have old roots.
You don’t have leaves.
You sit and grieve.
You don’t have flowers.
You have no powers.
Oh! Old Tree! What do we do with you?
The old tree was sad. He had done so much for the forest and the people who
passed through it. He had provided shade to hundreds of passersby for years. He
had given fruits that people relished and ate to their satisfaction. He had seen all
the young trees grow up before his eyes. And, this is what all of them wanted.
Old tree: (in his thoughts with his eyes shut) Where can I go? I will die standing
here only.
The old tree was lost in his thoughts when he heard the sound of an axe hitting a
piece of wood. He also heard the painful cries of a tree. He opened his eyes and
saw a woodcutter chopping a tree. All the trees were watching in horror. No one
was able to do anything.
1 tree: Help him!
st
2 tree: How can we help him?
nd
The old tree yelled at the woodcutter. The woodcutter’s name was Hari.
Old tree: Stop! What are you doing?
Hari: (surprised) Who called out to me?
Old tree: (angry) I called you, cruel man! Why are you hurting that tree?
Hari: (rubbing his eyes) How can you talk to me? You are a tree.
Old tree: You have left me with no choice but to talk. I also feel pain like human
beings. Why are you chopping that tree?
Hari: (confused) I have to cook food. I need wood for lighting fire.
