PREFACE




                    Childhood is a distinctive developmental stage of life. Children are unique

                    in terms of their intellectual, social, emotional and physical development

                    and, therefore, it requires great care while planning educational programmes

                    for them. With the world becoming more complex and challenging, there is
                    a great need for the next generation to learn how to cope with change. The

                    education system has to facilitate the unravelling of this potential and help

                    the younger generation turn into balanced individuals with the ability to
                    face the challenges of life.


                    Life Skills enable them to take on the challenges of life with confidence
                    and calmness. The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced

                    Life Skills Education as an integral part of the curricula for all classes. The

                    facilitators are advised to provide guidelines for each of the ten core Life

                    Skills as identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

                    Keeping this altruistic aspiration in mind, Madhubun is launching the
                    series—Up and Aware  for  classes  K–8. The activities in the textbooks

                    are specifically designed to enhance the skills of  Self-awareness, Critical

                    Thinking, Creative Thinking, Effective Communication, Interpersonal

                    Relationship, Coping with Emotion, Coping with Stress, Empathy,
                    Decision Making and Problem Solving. The purpose of this is a gradual

                    development of the values and skills as a formal link for cross-lifespan

                    interactions and learning experiences. In this series, the focus of the content
                    is to reinforce a particular value embedded in the textual matter and the

                    development of Life Skills in learners, which would help them to deal
