Notes to the Facilitator
The primary aim of this new series in Life Skills and Value Education—
Up and Aware for classes 3–5 is to help learners imbibe a variety of values and
life skills and engage them in direct application of their learning experience
within and outside the classroom. To promote this, facilitators need to encourage
learners to carry out the related activities in the books.
The textbooks intend to help facilitators mould learners’ thought processes so that
they can make informed decisions; solve problems; think creatively and critically;
communicate effectively; build healthy relationships; empathise with others; cope
with challenges; and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner.
The series is based on the curriculum on Value Education prescribed by CBSE.
The chapters comprise of comic strips to initiate discussion, value-based thematic
plays for quick and easy enactment, meaningful life skills-based projects and
questions related to Values (V), Attitudes (A) and Skills (S). Each book is divided
into ten chapters to generate classroom discussion on:
• practising values of honesty, compassion, accepting others, being respectful
• critical thinking in changing situations, problem solving
• coping with feelings and emotions
• making the right choices with the skill of decision making.
In this series, the focus of the chapters is to reinforce a particular value underlying
the comic strips, plays and activities. The life skills-based projects aim at helping
them deal positively and effectively with the challenging situations they encounter
in their daily lives.
We hope that the facilitators would gradually integrate other subjects like Language,
Science, Mathematics and Social Science with Life Skills and Value Education
which would promote a transdisciplinary approach in both scholastic and
co-scholastic areas. Such linkages have been drawn at the end of each chapter.
Facilitators need to employ interactive and facilitative pedagogy for transacting
these lessons. The activities are so designed to help the learners apply the relevant
content beyond the classroom.
Notes to the Parents can be used to encourage parents to speed up this process
by carrying out activities or practising a certain behaviour at home.
