The Warli art form is one of the oldest Indian folk art. The Warli region
of Maharashtra is famous for this folk art. It is basically a tribal art form
used to represent the social lifestyle and day-to-day activities like hunting,
fishing, farming, forest activities, and village life.
This art form uses geometric shapes like triangles, squares and circles
to depict the life and belief of the tribal people of Warli. Traditionally,
only two colours, red (ochre) and white are used in this style of painting.
These paintings also resemble the pre-historic cave paintings usually
depicting scenes of human figures engaged in activities like hunting,
dancing, sowing and harvesting.
1. Observe the above given paintings and describe what is happening in
each one. Share your observations with the class.
2. Do some more research on other forms of folk paintings belonging to
various parts of India like Madhubani, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Pithora
and many more. Choose any one folk style of painting and try creating
your own art inspired by it, and present it in your class.
