PREFACE
Up and Aware is a new series in Life Skills and Value Education for
classes K-8. It is based on the stage-specific gradation prescribed by
CBSE for Value Education. The series is an effort to imbibe values
in learners through interesting poems, stories, activities, games,
conversations, comic strips, real life contexts and problem-solving
situations. Through these books, we hope to inculcate desirable values,
while making the learners aware of and sensitive towards others, their
surroundings and the environment. This awareness and sensitivity
will help them grow into self-reliant, confident, compassionate and
responsible individuals.
What are Values?
Values are principles that drive our behaviour, influence our actions
and attitudes, and become the framework for our living. These
values influence our relationship with ourselves and others in our
environment. Values provide a clear understanding of acceptable
behaviour against which choices are evaluated.
Some values may vary across societies and cultures. As societies
evolve, we may reject some values and acquire new ones. However,
there are some core human values that all societies agree upon and
are universally acceptable. Some of these values are honesty, respect,
tolerance, compassion, patriotism, etc.
Relevance of Value Education
Studies have found that value-based education impacts behaviour,
relationships, learning environment, personal well-being and attitude.
This leads to improvement in academic achievement, self-esteem,
decision-making, self-control and understanding of the world around
learners.
