With new and emerging opportunities for professionals and consumers to utilize various forms of technology,
such as smartphones and tablets, it is important to examine their role as a learning tool. Quintana and
colleagues believe that the use of technology should be learner-centered, allowing for interaction between
learners and teachers.20 The use of a “scaffolding framework” technique in the design of software applications
includes a three-tiered approach to facilitate learning. The software should allow the learner to engage in (1)
sense making, (2) process management, and (3) reflection and articulation.21
