Sister Peggy Scholarship Program

A goal to support 25 scholarships annually

The Sr. Peggy Scholarship program has been a major success factor for our Mission in providing opportunities for families to
escape poverty. We are so grateful to all of the donors and sponsors who have made this possible for well over 100 graduates.
These graduates have achieved employment in the formal economy with benefits and are helping to take care of their families
and giving back by volunteering and mentoring in our programs.
As we emerged from the pandemic, focused on community development in Cambio Puente on the periphery of Chimbote
and adapted to economic changes and employment opportunities in Peru, we needed to update and modify the program for
continued and increased success. We have worked hard with good results. The modified program includes:

      • Post-secondary degree and expense profiles for
           local universities and technical institutes
      • Scholarship agreements including community and
           ACAF service
      • Candidate recruitment and qualifying including
          home visits
      • Candidate selection committee
      • Candidate and family profiles
      • Scholarship recipient progress reports
      • ACAF Staff support and oversight provisions
      • A goal to support 25 scholarships annually
Todd Mickelson, Sister Peggy and Tammy Campbell
The revised program with a preliminary rollout is very encouraging! We have excellent candidates and families who are very
dedicated, committed and grateful for the opportunity. Donors have not only expressed interest but have made commitments
to sponsor 16 students at an average annual cost of $2,200. These costs not only include tuition and materials but transportation
from the periphery and the back-end cost of degrees, titles and certificates. Of great importance to all involved with our
Mission, Sr. Peggy is very happy with the success, modifications and continuance of the program.

With these new commitments, we will have 25 students in the program. Legacy students who resumed after the pandemic
will be graduating over the next two years providing opportunities for new candidates. We invite you to join us in this proven
program to transform lives by sponsoring a scholarship.
If you would like to participate or learn more about this program, including candidate profiles
please contact Todd Mickelson at toddm@friendsofchimbote.org.

                                                                            Language Partners

Members of our ACAF team and FoC Board, staff and family members teamed up late
last year on a beta program to learn English and Spanish language and culture through
online interaction and practice sessions with each other. We created lessons for
practice and set up Zoom and Duo Lingo access for language partners who varied from
basic to advanced in their second language proficiency. We had 15 people participate
                                        from each organization.

The fun, interaction and learning far outweighed the technology, scheduling and
chagrin of pronunciation challenges. Based on the results and progress, we are going
to continue the program with new and improved lessons and tools. However, we
need some more English speakers since our ACAF team members who want to learn
and practice English outnumber our FoC team. If you are interested in learning more,
