Configuration Management is responsible for maintaining an understanding of the relationship of IT assets and components (one to another); and their relationship to the specific services that individual or groups of assets are supporting. The tracking of attributes and statuses of these Configuration Items (CIs) enables accurate information to be delivered to many other IT management entities. Understanding the environment enables better decision-making (specifically in regards to changes and stability).
• Define and Control the components of services and infrastructure
• Maintain accurate records relating to the historical state (all changes
from the past), the planned state (approved change, but not implemented), and the current state (ready to deliver, in maintenance, broken, ordered, received) of services and IT infrastructure.
• Identify and account for any IT assets or configurations used to deliver services to the business and support the businesses objectives.

Purpose:
Official – ensure that the assets required to deliver services are properly controlled, and that accurate and reliable information about those assets is available when and where it is needed. This information includes details of how the assets have been configured and the relationships between assets.
Unofficial – Manage the accuracy of a CMDB to ensure understanding of the relationship of configuration items to each other for the delivery of services.
