Configuration Items (CI’s)
A CI (Configuration Item) is an asset or service component that is, will be, or should be under the control of Configuration and Change Management. The reason for this control is that configuration items are important to the consistent delivery of services. If a configuration item is missing, changed to another state, or impaired, then it may react or respond differently than is expected when being used to deliver services upon which the customer depends.

Configuration Management selects CIs to be collected, grouped and classified throughout the service lifecycle. These groupings and classifications are then used to develop and present models of how the environment currently exists, how it existed in the past, or how it could exist in the future. This information should then be used to make intelligent decisions regarding the management of these configuration items. These models may be used by Incident Management, Change Management, Release Management, Problem Management and others to assess impact, consolidation options, or other management requirements.
