CI (Configuration Item) – any component that needs to be under the control of Change Management; and is used in the delivery of IT services.
Definitive spares - spare components and assemblies that are maintained at the same level as the comparative systems within the controlled test or live environment.
Configuration baseline - the configuration of a service, product or infrastructure that has been formally reviewed and agreed on. It captures the structure, contents and details of a configuration and may represent a set of configuration items that are related to each other.
Configuration Management Database (CMDB) - A database used to store configuration records throughout their lifecycle. The Configuration Management System maintains one or more CMDBs, and each CMDB stores attributes of CIs, and relationships with other CIs.
Configuration Management System (CMS) - A set of tools and databases that are used to manage an IT service provider’s configuration data. The CMS also includes information about incidents, problems, known errors, changes and releases; and may contain data about employees, suppliers, locations, business units, customers and users.
Service Knowledge Management System (SKMS) - A set of tools and databases that are used to manage knowledge and information. The SKMS includes the Configuration Management System, as well as other tools and databases. The SKMS stores, manages, updates, and presents all information that an IT service provider needs to manage the full lifecycle of IT services.
