What is a Role?
A role is a set of activities, responsibilities, and/or authorities granted to/or performed by a person, group or team. You assume a role based upon your current immediate activity or position. I am a grandfather based upon the fact that I have grandchildren. I play the role of
grandfather every time they visit. I am still a grandfather, even when they are not present, but when they are not present, I am not assuming
the role of grandfather. A
person can also assume a role based upon being a member of a group or team.
A member of the CAB
(change advisory board) is
a change advisor
based upon that
group membership.
Roles often identify
an expected
performance out of
the identified party.
Grandfathers are
expected to play
with grandchildren, CAB members are expected to advise on changes, etc.
