DNS

 Computer running DNS Service can be:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2019
- Microsoft Windows Server 2016
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows Server 2000
- Microsoft Windows NT 4
- UNIX
- Linux

Defile a hierarchical namespace where each of the name space is separated by a “.”

Zone: - Zone is a storage database which contains all zone records, two types zones are available are

1. Forward Lookup zone: -
Used for resolving hostnames to IP address. It maintains hostnames to IP address mapping
information.
2. Reverse lookup zone: -
Used for resolving IP address to hostnames. It maintains from IP address to hostnames mapping
information.
Forward Lookup zone = hostname – IP address.

Reverse Lookup zone = IP address – Hostnames.
To configure forward lookup zone (or) reverse lookup zone, the following records are used.

SOA (start of authority): - It is the first record at any zone file. It identifies the zone name.
