Domain Name System or Service
Provide resolution of name to IP address and resolution of IP address to names
Define a hierarchical namespace where each level of the name space is separated by a “.”
An Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are
alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses.
Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the
corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate
to 198.105.232.4.
Host File
Host files provides resolution of host names to IP address.
It can only resolve the name provides in the local host file.
It can’t be used as central database.
You can add the name and IP address in “/etc/hosts” and should be maintain in all the systems in
the network.
DNS: - Domain Name System provides resolution of names to IP addresses and resolution of IP
addresses to names.
