Before Apprentice Jockey Jeffery Burningham started race riding for a living he was rolling in the dough...... pastry dough that is.
In early 1997, Jeffery was an apprentice baker at a bakery on Vancouver Island and if it wasn’t for
a waitress in a seedy restaurant he may have still been working as a baker. “.....a waitress came over to me and said that I could be a rider. I showed no interest but she continued to come back a couple more times, the last was with a phone number for someone I should call.”
The phone number belonged to
Jockey Brian Boyd. Brian arranged
for Jeff, who had never even ridden a
horse before, to meet with trainer Dave Forester who in turn introduced him to former jockey turned Trainer Frank Barroby.
In 1999 Jeffery rode in his rst race and by 2000 he had achieved leading apprentice status at Hastings.
Jeffery had his eye on winning a Sovereign Award and moved to Woodbine for the remainder of
the meet. He liked it so much he decided to stay. Cory Clark won the apprentice award that year (Jeffery was second).
Jeffery rode at Woodbine in 2001 before moving his tack to various racetracks throughout the United States. His best years were 2004 to 2007 when he recorded 390 of his 769 career wins.
In 2008 a few weeks before returning to Delta Downs Jeffery was doing some yard work and a tree fell on him. He was paralyzed from the waist down for three
months.....read Tommy Wolski’s story here.
The past few years Jeffery has been among the top
ten riders at Hastings Racecourse however he slipped to 12th place in 2016 with only 12 wins this past year.
Win City pictured here with exercise rider George Hastings and groom William Larmond, is looking down the road to the Queen’s Plate. “He’s done everything right. He’s graduated in both distance and weight. 6 furlongs, 7 furlongs to 1 1/16. I am obviously happy with the way he is progressing.” says Trainer Robert Tiller.
Win City, bred by the late Frank Di Giulio Sr. and son Frank Di Giulio Jr. was owned by Frank Jr. and captured the 2001 Queenston and the G2 Marine Stakes and the Plate Trial Stakes before nishing
a game second (by 1/2 length) to Oaks winning
lly Dancetruthedawn in the Queen’s Plate. Win City went on to win the Prince of Wales Stakes, the G3 Col. R.S. McLaughlin H and the G3 Autumn on his way to being named 2001 Horse of the Year
and Champion 3 Year Old Male. He was retired in September 2002 after a few second and third stakes nishes that year.
