When Ring
of Flowers won
the Miss Money Penny Stakes on September 3, 2001 at Fort Erie Race Track it was the rst stakes win for her groom Darlene Marosevich.
Bred and owned by Gustav Schickedanz Ring of Flowers
was trained by Mike Keogh.
A couple years
later that Gus Schickedanz and Mike Keogh would be in the spotlight teaming up for a spectacular year.
In 2003 Mike had a barn full of homebreds for Gus including two Queen’s Plate horses, Wando and Mobil.
Going in to the Plate, Wando had already won the Woodstock and G3 Marine Stakes and Mobil had won the Queenston and Plate Trial Stakes. Wando went on to win the Queen’s Plate by nine lengths over stablemate Mobil who was second. Wando would sweep the Canadian Triple Crown Races, the Prince of Wales and the Breeders Stakes. Also that year Wando’s full sister, 2 year-old Six Sexy Sisters won the Ontario Lassie Stakes and Mobil went on to win the G3 Toronto Cup Handicap, the Halton Stakes, G3 Ontario Derby.
Wando was named 2003 Horse of Year and Champion 3 year old colt and the following year
Mobil was named 2004 Champion Older Horse after wins in the 2004 G3 Vigil Stakes, G3 Dominion Day Handicap, the Halton Stakes, and a second in the G3 Durham Cup Stakes.
Earlier successes for the Trainer/Owner pair included Woodcarver’s win in the 1999 Queen’s Plate and Champion 3 year old honours, as well as stallion Langfuhr, a multiple Grade 1 winner, named 1996 Champion Sprinter. Langfuhr went on to be a highly successful sire whose progeny includes both Wando and Mobil.
Mike Keogh continues to train for Gustav Schickedanz and enjoyed successes in 2016 including multiple winners including Fireball Merlin’s historic win in the rst ever Euro Turf race at Woodbine, and Will She’s win in the Fanfreluche Stakes.
Jockey Gary Stevens with trainer Neil Drysdale in the paddock at Woodbine before the sixth race
at Woodbine on Atto
Mile Day September 2001. Gary rode Louve Mysterieuse to a fourth place nish and also nished fourth aboard morning line favourite Irish Line in the Atto Mile.
After the horses crossed the nish line in the 2001 Canadian International the “of cial” sign was a long time coming. Immediately after the race the inquiry sign was posted as the Stewards reviewed four incidents involving half of the eld in the race. After lengthy deliberations the rst two placings remained unchanged however both Zindabad and Daliapour were disquali ed for separate racing violations. Zindabad was placed sixth for interfering with Falcon Flight in the stretch while Daliapur was demoted
to seventh for bothering Strut the Stage, the 5-2 favourite and the only three-year-old in the race. The Stewards’ decision thus elevated 48-1 shot Lodge Hill into third place, while Strut the Stage and Falcon Flight, which had dead-heated for sixth were jointly moved up to fourth.
