Working Terms and Basic Shapes

Without some basic knot-tying jargon, instructions would be impossibly
long and convoluted. We will use most of these terms repeatedly

               throughout the book.

Working end, working part, or running end: the free end of a rope
               manipulated in tying a knot.

Standing end, standing part: the end of the rope that is not fully subject to
manipulation in knot tying. Often, it is already fastened to something else. The
standing part is the length of rope facing the standing end and not subject to
               manipulation.
