                                          Introduction

                          1

               A. Description
Did you know how to say time in English? The first thing you should know is that
there are two ways that are commonly used to tell time, namely British style and
American style. In British style, the minutes are pronounced first followed by the hours.
For example, 08.25 is read as twenty-five past eight, twenty-five is the minute, and eight
is the hour. Besides that, in British style there are also several rules in saying the time,
namely: saying the 15th minute with the word “Quarter”, saying the 30th minute with the
word “Half” or rather “Half past”, saying the first 30 minutes with the word “Past”, and
use “To” for the remaining 30 minutes. While in American style, the hours are stated first,
followed by the minutes. For example, 08.25 is read as eight-twenty-five.
Then what about a.m. and p.m.? Did you know that the format for telling the time
in Indonesia and in English is different? If in Indonesian we often hear 18.00 while in
English it does not exist. So how you can tell the time based on the situation? You can do
it the simple way. First, you can add vocabulary like in the
morning/afternoon/evening/noon/midnight after the hour. Or you can also use the easiest
way, namely by adding a.m. (ante meridian) which is used from 00.00 – 12.00 and p.m.
(post meridian) which is used from 12.00 – 00.00.

               B. Precondition
Before studying the subject matter in this module students are expected to have
mastered numbers in English. In English, there are two types of numbers, namely cardinal
numbers (one, two, three, four, five, etc.) and ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth,
fifth, etc.). If you already know and understand ordinal and cardinal numbers, then you
will be able to tell hours in English.

               C. Instruction for use
To study this module properly, the student can follow the instructions below:
                       1. Prepare an English-Indonesian dictionary (printed or electronic).
                       2. Understand all of the material, then do all of the exercises properly.
                       3. Do evaluation questions at the end of the lesson to find out how far your
understanding is related to the material being studied.
                       4. Use the Bibliography prepared in the module to make your learning process
                          easier.

                                                                         E-book Telling Time 1
