Vivid memories of Manikda during the 1980s and my evergreen
appreciation of his films were the inspiration for this work – my
fourth, and final, book on Satyajit Ray. I hope that it helps to
bring a new audience not only to his most famous films, the Apu
Trilogy, but also to the rest of his extraordinarily varied output.
I would like to thank Oliver Craske, Nemai Ghosh, Indrani
Majumdar, Dilip K. Roy and Chandak Sengoopta for their help
over several years, and especially Ujjal Chakraborty, who gave
me some invaluable information about the novel Pather Panchali,
and Marc Riboud, who provided some classic photographs of
Ray taken during the making of the Apu Trilogy. The illustra-
tions by Ray are reproduced by agreement with the Satyajit Ray
                Society.
Philippa Brewster at I.B.Tauris was a supportive editor. Jayne
Ansell and Rohini Krishnan took great care in the production
                of the book.
