BLACKS AND WHITES

All about me, Negroes were stealing. More than once I had been
called a “dumb nigger” by black boys who discovered that I had not availed
myself of a chance to snatch some pretty piece of white property that had
been carelessly left within my reach.

No Negroes in my environment had ever thought of organizing, no
matter in how orderly a fashion and petitioning their white employers for
higher wages. The very thought would have been terrifying to them and
they knew that the whites, would have retaliated with swiftbrutality. So,
pretending to confirm to the laws of the whites, grinning, bowing, they let
their fingers stick to what they could touch. And the whites seemed to like
it.

But I, who stole nothing, who wanted to talk and act like a man, who
wanted to look them straight in the face, inspired fear in them. The
southern whites would rather have had Negroes who stole, work for them
than Negroes who know, however dimly, the worth of their a humanity.
Hence, whites placed a premium upon black deceit, they encouraged
irresponsibility, and their rewards were bestowed upon us blacks in the
degree that we could make them feel safe and superior.

DA ĐEN VÀ DA TRẮNG.

Chung quanh tôi, dân da đen đều ăn cắp. Hơn một lần trẻ da đen đã
gọi tôi là: “Thằng nhọ ngu” vì thấy tôi không lợi dụng cơ hội để xoáy vài
đồ vật của dân da trắng đã vô ý để vất vƣởng vừa tầm tay tôi.

Dân da đen ở vùng phụ cận tôi đã không hề bao giờ nghĩ tới chuyện tổ
chức, dù rất có trật tự và họ cũng không hề nghĩ tới chuyện yêu sách đám
chủ nhân da trắng tăng lƣơng. Chỉ nghĩ không, cũng làm họ hoảng hồn vì
biết ngƣời da trắng sẽ trả miếng ngay rất tàn nhẫn. Vì vậy trong khi làm ra

vẻ thuần thục pháp luật của dân da trắng, họ nhe răng cƣời, khom lƣng lại
và cứ ăn cắp vặt tất cả những thứ họ sờ tới. Và dân da trắng có vẻ thích
thấy nhƣ vậy.
