LEADER’S TALK
Takeo Takakura
Vice President, MPW-IND
Safety is look-ahead and preventive measures
"Look one step or two ahead and take action in advance for possible incident."
It is too late to take measures after an incident occurs. It is important to take measures in advance to
prevent possible disasters from occurring.
Prevention means before an incident occurs, that is, "activities to prevent it". It seems easy to prevent, but
it is actually very difficult because we take measures in advance for incidents that have not occurred.
For example, many people don't want to come down Covid. Therefore, everyone will does vaccination. In
addition, it will take measures to prevent Covid, such as taking a distance each person and wearing the
mask. If you get Covid, you may have to take a leave work, and/or transferred Covid to your neighbour
persons, and worst case will be dead by Covid.
Similarly, if there is an incident during construction, various things will occur, such as delays due to
interruption of construction schedule and a burden on the families of the victims. As with Covid
vaccinations, if you're prepared in advance, an incident will not be occurred, and processes and costs will
not be wasted. Therefore, for safety, look-ahead and preventive measures are important.
- 5 reasons why prevention does not work
1. Low awareness of the safety of the parties concerned
2. Insufficient analysis of past incidents
3. Information on past incidents have not been appropriately informed to the everyone.
4. Unable to predict possible incidents
5. Measures are not appropriate
It is undeniable that it is difficult to be able to "take action on possible incidents in advance", which
requires a lot of experience.
However, if you have an experience by working on prevention, you can prevent incidents.
It promotes self-growth by cultivating the ability to see things objectively, think carefully, and read ahead.
