Born and reared in the Old Choctaw nation in Southeast Oklahoma, Dr. E. J.
Mcclendon is Professor Emeritus of Public Health at the University of
Michigan, and a Private Consultant in Public Health. A B.S. degree graduate
of the University of Oklahoma with a masters degree in public health, he
holds a doctorate in public health fr om Wayne State University.
Before going to the University of Michigan, he was Assistant State
Superintendent of Education for Health Programs with a joint appointment
in the Department of Public health. he formerly was Executive
Vice -President of Highland Park Community College and prior to that he
was Director of School Health for Wayne County. He came to Michigan in
195 5 to be Assistant Director of TB Control in Detroit and Wayne County,
a position he had previously held in the State of Oklahoma.
He is past chairman and Honorary Life Member of the Board of the S.E.
Michigan Division of the American Cancer Society and a twenty year
member of the National Cancer Society Board, past national president of
the American School Health Association and member of the Presidents
Advisory Council for one of the National Institutes of Health. He has been
a member· and officer of some sixteen national professional public health
and health care societies.
He has been adjunct and visiting professor at Michigan State, Wayne State
and Eastern Michigan Universities as well as the Universities of Oklahoma,
Wisconsin and Kent State.
He is the author of six books and some sixty articles in professional
journals. He served on the Surgeon General's AIDS Education Group, and
the Governor 's Advisory Committees for AIDS Policy, Drug Abuse
Prevention and Child Abuse Intervention. He also was a consultant to the
legislature on the Reproductive Health Act and chaired the group which
wrote the guidelines for it. A member of the Plymouth -Canton Board of
Education since 197 2, He has served three terms as it's president, twice
as v ice -president and as President of the Metropolitan Association for
Improved School Legislation.
Dr. McClendon has been a part -time Consultant for the World Health
Organization, the Health Division of the United Nations in child health, school
health and health training since 1976. He has worked in some 26 countries
ranging from North Africa to S. E. Asia and has made up Rotary in all 26.
He helped implement the Polio Plus Program in Malaysia, Papua New Guinea
and Fiji.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War 11, seeing Destroyer
Duty in the North Atlantic . Caribbean and the Pacific. He holds some five
combat decorations. Mcclendon has been biographed in Who's Who in
Ameri ca, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the Child Care
Professions and American Men of Science. Re received the William A.
Howe Award, the highest honor award of the American School Health
Association, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health and has received
some forty other awards and citations from regi onal, national and
international associations and societies.
E.J. has been a member of Plymouth Rotary since 197 3. He has been
married to Ruby for 4 1 years and has 3 grown children and 4
grandchildren. E.J. and Ruby are both Paul Harris Fellows.
