This July 1st marks the start of Mike Muma 's year as president.
It also marks ten years since he moved his Jaw practice to Plymouth and,
less one month, twelve years since he first moved his home to our fair
community.
Born and raised in northwest Detroit, Mike commenced to
practice law in downtown Detroit in 1979. Except for a few months
working for a small Detroit firm, Mike has been his own boss ever since,
concentrating the entire time on wills, trusts, and probate work In 1991,
Mike moved his office to its present location on Main Street in the historic
Charles Bennett House, constructed more than a few years prior in 1875.
Our president. the eldest of fi ve children. was raised by a self-
employed independe11t insurance agent . His father, Jack Muma. still
operates the Hudson & Muma I nsurancc agency in downtown Royal Oak.
employing three of Mike's four siblings Mike allended Catholic Central
and Detroit Redford high schools. and earned his bachelor's degree from
Wayne Stale University. graduating first in his class in 1974. That same
year. Wayne State awarded him one of the first David Saffran Awards for
student leadership.
A few months later, our president began his studies in the law at
Wayne State University Law School, graduating in 1978, having earned his
juris doctor degree.
On October 2, 1982, Mike and Sue Patterson completed their
nuptial negotiations, and on a beautiful autumn evening, both agreed that
yes, they would take one another as husband and wife. One thing led to
another, and before long Mike & Sue found themselves parents to Matt, a
nine year old, and Alexandra, a six year old. Most spring and fall weekends
now find our incoming president at the soccer pitch cheering for one or the
other youngster.
Overt he yea rs Mr. Muma has found himself active in various civic
and professional activities. These have included the American Bar
Association, Detroit Bar Association, and the Union Internationale des
Avocats. In 1986 the late Clarence DuCharme recruited Mike to the board
of the Plymouth Canton Substance Abuse Task Force, to which Mike was
elected president in 1990.
Mike's goals for 1995-96 are to increase club membership and
involve every Plymouth Rotarian in one or another club activity. Expect
him to repeat on regular occasions that "one profits most when serving
best."
