Good Governance: Continuous self-assessment
How to use the self-assessment process
The self-assessment is made up of 5 sections which mirror the five principles of the Scottish Governance
Code. Each section lists ways to demonstrate and implement the related principle and suggests how the
organisations good governance could be evidenced.
At the end of each section there is space to identify and prioritise areas for improvement, assigning
responsibility and timeline for achievement. Areas for improvement information, from each section, are
then added to a separate form of required actions/ improvements, thus creating an action plan.
The self-assessment tool is flexible, for example used as the subject of a whole meeting; in sections
throughout the year; sections delegated to sub-groups or as part of a Boards development day. A
separate evidence master form has been designed to capture the fact that many evidence documents
relate to more than one assessment section. Links to evidence documents can be added for ease of
access and review.
