Rocknation: You’ve made many appearances on the
AXS TV’s show “The Top Ten Revealed.” How fun has
that been doing them?
Joey: You know what, Katie Daryl is a sweet heart and a
great interviewer. It’s so painless, and you know the peo-
ple there at AXS are cool. You know, they try to get a rise
out of you so you say something funny and entertaining,
but it is honest – that is what I like about it. I don’t watch
myself a lot after I do things like that, but I kind of see if they
represent the right way. Because when you do something,
sometimes the interviews can be taken out of context and
make you sound like an asshole. It just happens. They are
a good company to work with. We love to do more, and
Robert interviewed with them a few weeks ago for the next
round. They got picked up for another season so good for
them. It’s fun stuff – Erik, Jerry, Steven and Robert so we
now have the whole band on there.
Rocknation: We just had the seventh anniversary of
Jani Lane’s death last month. What fond memory do you have of the early days with him?
Joey: Man, there was so many of them were fond. You know just when we would look at each other and just start laughing
uncontrollably about something, or I would make him laugh. I miss a lot of that stuff. I don’t miss the dark stuff that went down
obviously you know, but just having him around. He did not need to be in this band anymore. If he did not want to be in the
band, or he could not handle touring or whatever back in the day when we tried to do the reunion. It would be nice to have him
around for family and friends and all the fans that are out there that would have loved to hear him. So, the fond memories of a lot
of fun stuff, and basically the smiles, the laughs, and miss him.
Rocknation: I was living in Houston and saw the band at the Rock The Bayou festival.
Joey: Oh yea, I was there too. Unfortunately, in fact that was the night it was all over. He just wanted to drink, and we had a
sober coach out with us. There is a lot of history on this if they care to read about it.
What guitar endorsements are you working with right now?
Joey: We play GMP out of San Dimas, California; owned by Dan Lawrence. Dan bought the name from the original guy who
had it. He has been using it for awhile. Another guy who I was talking to a little while ago, CC DEVILLE from Poison, plays
GMP. The company is less than a mile away for the old JACKSON factory. That is where Wayne Charvell and Grover Jackson
had GMP when it started, and now Dan makes really solid guitars. I have two of them out on the road and I rarely have to tweak
anything on them if at all for a good year. They are all over the place -- trailers, planes. It just speaks how well they are made.
So, we use GMP guitars, Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36W amp’s, Intune guitar picks, Dean Markley strings - since 1987,
Morley Wah pedal - since1988 and Mystar Sound guitar cables. I hope I’m not
forgetting anybody.
Rocknation: Thank you for taking time
for this interview. Any last words to
the fans?
Joey: Thanks for the support. I mean
here we are what like 30 years later.
Dirty Rotten came out ‘89 -- I don’t
remember it has been so long -- but we
continue to have fun and we still get
along like brothers. We love one another
and we fight just like brothers do, but for
the most part we get along great. We are
still on the road 50-60 shows a year. If
you see us, come out and say “Hi.” And,
thank you for the years of support!
