A Sense of Community
Abby Vandermuren found a new home in Middlesex
County just one and a half years ago. She was offered a
position as Recreation Coordinator in the small town of
Lucan Biddulph and decided the job was worth the move.
Abby’s role is a community-oriented one, where she is
involved in the day to day programming for the town,
creating active opportunities for people of all ages. Being a
newcomer to a town can be frightening, however, Abby
describes her move to Middlesex as anything but: she was
welcomed with open arms and friendly faces. The
small-town community has made it extremely easy for her
to settle in and she has met numerous wonderful people,
both through her job and by living in the area.
Abby highlights that Middlesex has access to
everything you need, including local businesses and fitness
clubs. On top of having all your amenities within walking
distance, Abby also loves that the area is so connected with
nature, describing how you can go from town streets to country trails in just seconds.
Abby characterizes the county as driven: people of all ages are putting their best foot forward to
reach their full potential. Everyone rallies together, working hard to better the community, such as they
did for Kraft Hockeyville, where they came together to show their love of hockey, earn money for their
community center and even host an NHL hockey game.
There are many opportunities and resources to help
everyone get involved in the community. Abby has
joined a local gym, participated in town events and has
been given a chance to sit on committees that promote
healthy, active kids.
What Abby loves most about Lucan Biddulph is
the knowledge that her involvement at work and in the
community will better the lives of everyone involved.
It is this community-engaged mindset displayed by
everyone that makes Middlesex County a beautiful place to call home.
