This is the strongest way to join two ropes. It reduces the line’s breaking strength
by about 10 percent.
(1) Untwist the strands of each rope a half dozen turns, then, “marry” alternating
strands together.
(2) To keep the “nonworking” strands temporarily out of the way, you may want
to lightly whip or tape them to the rope body. Some sailors also tape the ends of
each strand to keep them from unraveling.
The rest of the splice is academic: Simply tuck each strand alternately against
the lay of the rope, as illustrated. Three or four tucks ensure maximum strength,
