Chief Deputy Naldo Gagnon
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continued to lead
the way in 2019 by seeking and being awarded re-accredited
status by the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The Cumberland
County Sheriff’s Office was initially accredited in 2015
and was the first and is the only Sheriff’s Office in Maine
to demonstrate the commitment to following contemporary
best law enforcement policies and processes through
CALEA accreditation. There are only six other CALEA
accredited law enforcement agencies in the State of Maine.
CALEA accreditation is the gold standard of law
enforcement accreditation. Accreditation is achieved by
creating policies and processes that meet the 184 standards
required. The standards cover nearly every operational area
of a contemporary law enforcement agency. As Sheriff
Joyce stated, “I always knew the employees of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office were the best,
now I have the proof!”
In July of this year, the Towns of Gray and Standish extended their Patrol Contracts with the
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office by adding an additional Deputy. Two new Deputies were hired
to fill these new positions and have recently graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in
December. These Deputies will assume their new roles in Gray and Standish in February.
Additionally, the Town of North Yarmouth requested a proposal for a Patrol Contract. This proposal is
for one Deputy and would be the Town’s first Patrol Contract.
Late in 2019, the Lake Region School District approached the Sheriff’s Office about a Contract for a
School Resource Deputy. The District will vote on the Contract in the upcoming months. If all goes
well, the new School Deputy would begin their role in the fall of 2020 with the beginning of the school
year.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continues to provide Law Enforcement Contact services to
several Municipalities and School Districts in Cumberland County.
