THEME
A theme is the central idea or concept that sets the tone for a school’s
yearbook. It begins on the cover and is repeated throughout a yearbook
in various locations. A good theme is more than just words and visuals
thrown on a page—it has meaning as its anchor. The theme’s message
unifies the yearbook’s storytelling, adds personality to its presentation
and can inspire marketing campaigns. Moreover, it personalizes the
entire experience for its readers.
Creating all aspects of theme is a tall order. But by looking at the 5 W’s
and H of theme—what and when it is, where it’s found in the book,
why it’s worth the trouble, how it’s created and most important, who
it’s for—theme not only becomes part of the process for creating a
yearbook, it becomes the single most powerful force behind the process.
