Appendix V: NAVAL VESSELS SENT OUT TO ASIA, 1783-1794
From 1783 the States General on several occasions sent out warships to Asia to support the VOC, itself not sufficiently equipped for this, in the defence of its position in the East. The ships were equipped by the five admiralties in the Dutch Republic. On both the outward and homeward voyages these warships escorted the Company's East Indiamen, while in Asia they were deployed at various points. In the list below an enumeration of the ships is given.
Sources: the lists of ships in the Overgekomen Brieven from Batavia and Ceylon, ARA, VOC 3656, 3690, 3708, 3723, 3772, 3742, 3867, 3914, and in the Overgekomen Brieven from the Cape of Good Hope, ARA, VOC 4307, 4315, 4320, 4351; De Jonge, Zeewezen IV,688-751.Mr.H.WijnM.A.ofthedepartment ofMaritimeHistoryatTheHague was kind enough to make the Collectie Claassen available for research, as well as other documents held by this institute containing data on the ships in question.

All ships except for the MONNIKENDAM called at False Bay; they sailed from there for Table Bay on 25.8.1783. In Asia the ships took part in the successful action in the Malacca Straits, resulting in the relief of the town of Malacca, under siege from the troops of the regent of Riouw and the ruler of Selangor. Then the ships, again with the exception of the MONNIKENDAM, sailed for Ceylon. Details of the homeward voyage are as follows:
