Au Bon Climat ("A well exposed vineyard") was founded in 1982 with the focus on Burgundian
varietals. The renowned Californian winery today sells over 50,000 cases annually. The winery
has cultivated an International reputation for its grape varieties including Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay.
Jim Clendenen is the founder and
owner of Au Bon Climat. A change in
career path at the age of 21 from pre
law to wine has resulted in him being a
well respected wine-maker globally.
In the 1980s and 90s the product mix was at Au Bon Climat was 75% to 80% Chardonnay to 20% to
25% Pinot Noir. Chardonnay was king and people had not discovered the joys of Pinot Noir. All this
began to change in the late 90s and now Au Bon Climat makes an equal amount of Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay.
Au Bon Climat ‘Wild Boy’ Chardonnay
The winemaker himself illustrated on the label) is made exclusively from
chardonnay grapes grown in Santa Barbara.
Tasting notes : Golden straw in colour, an attractive nose reveals notes of
citrus, ripe stone fruit, toast and a hint of smoke. Rich and creamy in
texture, the palate is concentrated and generous with an abundance of
layered ripe fruit and harmoniously integrated oak. Crisp and focused on the
finish, this is an excellent entry-level Californian chardonnay that offers
immense drink-ability. Best enjoyed with poultry and simple fish dishes.
Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara
Tasting notes : Strawberries and blackberries aromas slowly rise out of the glass.
Overtime, more of the anise and clove will mix with these other aromas. Like all
Au Bon Climat wines, this is a food wine. In its youth, match this wine with lamb
or dried meats. After a few years, as the flavors coalesce, it will pair better with
salmon or mild red sauce with pasta. We have enjoyed this wine with many food
choices from spicy Indian dishes to all-American sandwiches, and the wine
worked well with most anything. The possible food pairings are almost endless.
