P. 7
Dear Friend,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my sincere gratitude as a scholarship
recipient at Morehouse School of Medicine. Thank you for your loyal generosity by contributing
to the Gloster Society and the Gloster Celebration event.
My name is Aliviana Najjar, and I was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. Before
becoming an MD candidate, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University
and a Master’s in Medical Science degree from Morehouse School of Medicine. The past years I
have spent at this institution, have been transformative, rigorous, and deeply meaningful. I have
grown academically from a student intaking information to pass an exam, into a knowledge
seeker, captivated by the thought of learning more of what I love. I have learned the importance
of understanding the intersectionality between health disparities and social inequality, for its
influence on healthcare is undeniable. I have also learned the importance of community because
I have never felt more nurtured or at home than I currently do at school. Each day, I am
surrounded by peers and professors whose dedication to bettering the lives of others, encourage
me to work harder to realize my goals.
As a student at Morehouse School of Medicine, I have been inspired by this institution’s social
responsibility to the people of their surrounding community. Collaborating, and learning from
those in the community has helped broaden my perspective, allowing me to better empathize
with others, and ultimately become a more well-rounded physician. Because of the social
mission at Morehouse School of Medicine, I cannot see myself being a physician without the
added social responsibility of advocating and being a resource for my community. The
scholarship I received has given me the opportunity to grow, learn, and become what I have
always wanted- a medical student on her way to becoming a physician. In my eyes, receiving a
scholarship encourages me to dig deeper, and work diligently to become not only the best student
I can be, but also the most globally conscious, empathetic person I can become.
Kindest regards,
Aliviana Najjar
