Year in BS/MS Program - Senior Year (2nd Year)
My name is Je’Niesa Manning, and I was born and raised in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. I have been fascinated by the human body from a
young age, and I knew I wanted to be a doctor when I was 14 after
seeing a live surgery. I am currently a senior biology major at Spelman
College. When I heard about the B.S./M.S. in Neuroscience program at
the Neuroscience Institute at MSM, I was super intrigued at the chance
to get a taste of research in neuroscience before going to medical
school. The brain is one of the most complex systems in this world, and
the many unanswered questions are what attracted me to
neuroscience. I am currently interested in how the nervous system
plays a role in communicating with our immune system to fight off
diseases. I chose this program because it would help me explore my interests within neuroscience,
and surprisingly I have discovered more about myself. This program gives me access to endless
knowledge with doctors who are experts in their field all around me. It has given me a space to
explore and ask questions. I aspire to be a neurosurgeon and advocate for my community to receive
the best medical care possible. This program is teaching me to think critically, problem-solve, and that
I am capable of reaching and even surpassing the goals I have set out to achieve.

Year in BS/MS Program - Master Year (3rd Year)
Greetings! My name is Hamadi Brewer. I am currently a student in
the masters year of the BS/MS Neuroscience program. My plan is
to follow this degree by pursuing a MD/MPH. I currently imagine a
career where I would be working within research implementation
as a Psychiatrist. I sought out this program because it provided me
an opportunity to better expose myself to both the academic and
laboratory side of research. In addition, Neuroscience and more
broadly mental health has always been a subject that has
captivated me with particular significance to my community as an
African-American. Through my matriculation of this program, I
have gained deeper insights to a variety of topics such as
neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, and neurological disorders.
More importantly, I have developed a more critically thoughtful mind, that seeks to understand the
process of discovery as much as the conclusion. I am very grateful to this program for helping me
foster this knowledge and I will carry the tools I have gained here across the rest of my journey.
