Year in BS/MS Program - Master Year (3rd Year)
Hello, My Name is Tiana Hill, and I am a student in the BS/MS
program. Currently in my master’s year of this program. I’m working in
Dr. Shobu Namura’s lab at Morehouse School of Medicine,
characterizing a cell line derived from fibroblast cells. I have gained a
tremendous amount of knowledge and confidence in my research
capabilities learning and doing research at MSM over the past few
years. I initially entered the BS/MS program because of my interests
in biology and psychology. I genuinely wanted to understand the
biology behind what made people do the things they did and make
their decisions. After the BS/MS program, my goal is to pursue a
medical degree in psychiatry or neurology. I’m still in the process of
making that decision. However, This Program and Morehouse School of Medicine as a whole have
provided me with various resources to begin navigating my path towards medicine better than I could
have by myself. Though I have my sights set on medical school, opportunities provided from being in
the BS/MS program have exposed me to many different career paths I could potentially take. I’m
allowing myself to explore many and choose which one would be best for me and one to which I
would most adequately contribute.
Gabrielle Cain
Background - Senior, Biology, Spelman College
Year in BS/MS Program - Senior Year (2nd Year)
My name is Gabrielle Cain and I am currently a senior at Spelman
College. I have a firm belief that higher education extends beyond the
scope of the classroom and its value comes from the applications of
lessons learned. One of the lessons I am learning while in undergrad is
to seize opportunities and with that, be willing to fail. I learned about the
BS/MS program my sophomore year in college. I wasn't interested at
first because a Master's in Neuroscience seemed daunting. Someone a
couple of years ahead of me in the program made it seem realistic and
completely plausible. I decided to apply for the program and try my hand
at pursuing a BS/MS in Neuroscience. After the first couple of semesters
in the program, I realized I really liked the program. I not only liked the
program for the material taught in class; I liked the way the class forced
me to think, I liked that I learned how to ask questions and think like a scientist, and lastly, I liked
having professors and professionals around me who wanted to help me grow. My goals and interests
include leveraging my scientific and military training to work in a Naval Aviation lab to better
understand the neuroscience behind the "G-LOCing" (G-Force Induced Loss of Consciousness)
phenomena. The program helps me to get closer to this goal through asking hard questions,
connecting me with the people I need, and encouraging me to never stop learning.
