Student Experiences within the BSMS Program

             Shaeloren Deering

Background - BS, Biology, 2021, Spelman College
Year in BS/MS Program - Master Year (3rd Year)
My name is Shaeloren Deering, and I am a first-year master's student
in the MSNS program. I applied to the BS/MS in Neuroscience
program to explore neuroscience and pursue my graduate education
early. In the future, I plan to further my education at medical school or
graduate school. I want to use my experience as an opportunity to
help me align my interests and decide which future path I want to
pursue. Involvement in this program has allowed me to receive a free
degree, start graduate coursework as an undergraduate, and study
neuroscience more extensively. I am incredibly grateful for the
opportunity to expand my knowledge freely without concerns about the
cost of living in Atlanta or MSM tuition and fees. Through this program,
I have also met many neuroscientists and connected with multiple
students with similar interests. I have grown so much since the start of this program and know that
my gained knowledge will help me succeed in future endeavors.

             Imani Roberts
Background - BS, Biology, 2021, Spelman College
Year in BS/MS Program - Master Year (3rd Year)

My name is Imani Roberts, and I am a student in the BS/MS
Neuroscience Program at Morehouse School of Medicine. As an
undergraduate student, I majored in biology. However, I have always
enjoyed the subject of psychology. I joined the program hoping to
bridge the gap between biology and psychology, and it has! My
ultimate goal is to become a wildlife veterinarian. While in the
program, I’ve been able to gain research experience for the first time,
studying circadian biology in the mouse retina. My work has shown
me the value of using animal models to gain knowledge about human
systems and diseases. Finally, I’ve been able to work with animals,
which will be valuable towards preparing for veterinary school and a
                                            career caring for animals.
