Major Initiatives:
1. Telehealth Program (Iris Grant) – “The Morehouse School of Medicine
(MSM)/Morehouse Healthcare (MHC) Telehealth Program is designed to decrease the
incidence of health disparities amongst minority and underserved communities by
integrating healthcare technology to deliver optimal virtual care.”
Internal Resource: Gregory Antoine
Total Supplemental Budget Needs: $408,440
2. Natural Product Research Center (Aimee Ahmad) – “This global coronavirus pandemic has
opened a set of unique opportunities for MSM to demonstrate its capabilities in basic science,
clinical research, and diagnostics development. Various new federal funding opportunities that
have been released in the last month provide access to potential funds for research and NPRC
infrastructure strengthening. The private and philanthropic sectors are likewise open to
supporting research to combat this global crisis. The earlier research of the MSM Natural
Product Research Center demonstrates effectiveness of the PROMETRA natural product against
multiple viruses – HIV, Ebola, Herpes Simplex and Influenza. The COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly
changing the world in which we live and work. However, looking at this pandemic not as a
catastrophe, but as a unique opportunity for MSM to build on its recent virology research
successes to establish an even larger US and global structure looking at emerging pathogens of
all types and how we can identify and address them from all aspects. And we envision that
through these activities MSM could potentially provide a life-saving treatment for the pandemic,
demonstrate the quality of MSM research infrastructure, and increase the infrastructure of our
emerging Natural Products Research Center (scientists and equipment) in building these
emerging pathogens research team.”
Internal Resource: Virginia Floyd, Vincent Bond, Sandra Harris Hooker, Michael Powell, and
Daniel and Nelson have been working on federal and state support of these priorities and may
have additional information to add.
Total Supplemental Budget Needs: $5 million
3. IT Support for Student Learning and Business Continuity (Aimee Ahmad) – As with most
businesses, MSM has transitioned to a virtual campus and has urgent needs to support the
business continuity of our student learning and instruction, and the business operation of
School. The three major areas of support are: Standard Virtual Teaching Laptops; Global Virtual
Learning Platform and Virtual Staff Augmentation
Internal Resource: Reggie Brinson
Total Supplemental Budget Needs: $1,091,500
