There w as a very narrow bridge between East Mountain

            and West Mountain. Every d a y Brown G o a t cro ssed it to

drink from the coldest w ater in the pond on West Mountain.

            Every d a y Black G o a t crossed it to e a t the juiciest

g ra ss on East Mountain. Brown G o a t always crossed early,

            and Black G o a t always crossed late.

            One day, Brown G o a t got up late so both g o a ts w ere on

            the brid ge at the same time. Brown G o a t said, “ G o back!
                                                                                                                 What are the most
            I ’m the oldest so I should cross first.” Black G o a t said,
                                                                                                                 important parts of
“ You g o b ack! I ’m the smartest so I should cross first.” the sto ry so far?

            They pushed each

            other with their horns

            They pushed with the

same fo rc e so they

didn’t move fo rw a rd

            or b a c k w a rd .

They pushed fo r a long time and then

they both go t tired and fell into the

            river below the bridge.

The g o ats swam to the riverbank.

Then they slowly w alked home to their

            mountains. They were angry, tired,

wet, cold, and hungry. And that’s what

happens to stubborn little go ats.
