C. READING
IX Read the passage. Fill in the blank with a suitable word.
The abstract noun “borrowing” (1) ..................... to the process of speakers adopting (2)
..................... from a source language into their native language. The actual process of
borrowing (3) ..................... complex and involves many usage events (i.e. instances of use of
the new word). Generally, some speakers of the borrowing language know the source
language too, or at least enough of it to utilize the relevant word. They (often consciously)
adopt the new word when speaking the borrowing language (4) ..................... it most exactly
fits the idea they are trying to express. If they are bilingual in the source language, which is
often the case, they might pronounce the words the same or (5) ..................... to the way they
are pronounced in the source language. For example, English speakers adopted the word
garage (6) ..................... French, at first with a pronunciation nearer to the French
pronunciation than is now usually found. Presumably the very first speakers (7) .....................
used the word in English knew at least some French and heard the word used by (8)
..................... speakers, in a French-speaking context.
X Read the passage.
Why has English become a global language?
People often call English the international language of business, and it’s increasingly true
as international trade expands every year, bringing new countries into contact. Many of the
best MBA programs are taught in English, so speaking it well can put you in a position to get
the best training and credentials. Most multinational companies require a certain degree of
English proficiency from potential employees, so in order to get a position with a top
company, more and more people are learning English.
If your ambitions lie in science or medicine, you can’t neglect English either. Much of the
technical terminology is based on English words, and if you want to learn about the latest
developments and discoveries from around the world, you’ll read about them in journals and
research reports published in English, no matter whether the scientists who wrote them are
from China or Norway.
