Dilution & Carriers
Carrier Oils
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil grape seed oil, or olive oil that can be used to dilute essential oils. Carrier oils ensure that essential oils are applied comfortably and prevent waste from excessive application. They do not lessen the strength of an oil.
Neat Application
Neat is applying oils on topically without carrier oil. Many oils can be applied neat, but until you know how your body responds to a particular oil, apply it diluted 1:1 with a carrier oil and watch for any irritation or discomfort. When in doubt, check the label for dilution recommendations.
Dilution for Kids
Oils can be used topically on babies beginning at 6 months of age. A great place to apply is to the soles of their feet. Dilute 3x the label recommendation for kids 6 months – 2 years of age. For 2-10 years, dilute 2x the label recommendations. For ages 10 and up, follow the label use or use 1:1 dilution. Go low and go slow, you can always add more!
