THE LYREBIRD
O gaudy symbol of our bush.
Enthroned in realms of gold.
What songs of wonder do you sing.
Emblazoned in tracks of old.
Vain bird with famed exquisite tail.
With sharp and bold bright eyes.
In praise and glory do you steep.
The world before you lies.
With haughty stance and upward gaze.
On your mound you do dance and play.
An image of perfect serenity
And grace, as the dawning day.
Yet, how very different the world would be.
Without your tail and show.
With only your small brown body left.
Your heart, so humble and low.
A part of Australia’s uniqueness
Which stands through toil and time.
How far in history will you stand.
Pomp, show, and tail sublime.
