3. Description: Things
Objectives of the Unit
Upon completion of this unit, you are expected to be able to:
1. Write a thing (object) with the appropriate generic structure (introduction, description
of features, and conclusion);
2. Understand social function appropriately in describing things;
3. Use language features in describing things; specific habits, simple present tense,
adjective, and action verb.
Prepare Before Reading
In this unit, you will learn about descriptions which focus on texts which give a clear
account of objects. What are objects? They are descriptions of a certain non-living, or living
thing, with distinctive qualities that it has. The aim of is to help the reader to create an

accurate, or near-accurate mental picture of what is being described. Before reading the
text, brainstorm these questions with the person next to you.
1. What topic might this story be about?
2. What do we already know about this topic?
3. Have we read any other books about this topic?
4. Do we have any experience related to this topic?
5. Where and when did we have the experience?
