It is with great pride and honor that I present this recipe book, a heartfelt endeavor to celebrate
and preserve the culinary heritage of the Kar Yin Hakka community.
Hakka cuisine is more than just food—it is a story of resilience, adaptability, and deep connec-
tions to our roots. Every recipe within these pages tells a tale of our ancestors’ ingenuity and their
ability to transform humble ingredients into flavorful and nourishing dishes that have stood the test
of time. This collection serves as a vivid reminder of our identity, a bridge connecting us to our past
while embracing the future.
This recipe book is not only a culinary guide but also a cultural bridge, inviting everyone to ex-
perience the essence of Kar Yin Hakka traditions. I commend the author and editors for their dedica-
tion to ensuring that our rich heritage is documented and shared for generations to come.
As you explore these recipes, may you taste not just the flavors but also the stories, traditions,
and love that have been poured into this collection. Let us cherish this legacy, celebrate our Kar Yin
Hakka roots, and continue to promote and preserve our unique culture.
It is worth noting that our Penang Kar Yin Fee Kon Association is one of the oldest associations
in Penang—if not in Malaysia. Although the exact date of its establishment cannot be ascertained,
historical documents and artifacts suggest that it dates back to before 1801, not long after Captain
Francis Light founded Penang in 1786. This rich history further underscores the importance of pre-
serving our cultural heritage and sharing it with the world.
