Editor’s Epilogue

Bernard Kok

In 2018, I had the privilege of traveling with my family from Penang, Malaysia, to Shangluole,
Xiyang Town, Guangdong Province, China—the hometown my great-great-grandfather left about
165 years ago. There, I met the author’s father and other clan relatives. Guided by the genealogy
book compiled by my great-grandfather, I was able to locate my ancestral hometown. This journey

of tracing my roots felt like unveiling the veil of my ancestors’ lives in their homeland.
A lasting impression from my visit to Xiyang Town was the authentic Hakka lunch my fam-
ily and I enjoyed. The dishes were both delicious and unique, with most of them being flavours I
had never experienced in Malaysia. At that moment, an idea struck me: should I introduce these
truly authentic Hakka dishes to the Malaysian Chinese community, especially to our fellow Kaying
               clansmen?
In Shangluole, I had the privilege of meeting the father of this cookbook’s author, Guo

Huaqun, along with other clan relatives. I am incredibly proud and delighted to collaborate with
Guo Huaqun, a talented Hakka chef. According to our family lineage, he is my grandnephew.
I want to especially commend Huaqun for the effort and dedication he has poured into this
cookbook. Not only has he meticulously showcased these mouthwatering Hakka dishes, but he has
also brought to life the wisdom and culinary heritage of our Hakka ancestors through the stories
behind the recipes. His hard work provides us with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the
rich essence of Hakka cuisine while allowing more people to cherish the value of this cultural legacy.
Finally, I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the
               creation of this cookbook.
